A stroll in any part of the city is all it takes to get a sense of the vast opportunity in Sault Ste. Marie.

In the east end, the new Biosciences and Technology Centre is taking Algoma University to exciting heights. Not only will it help the school attract students and faculty to the city, it also adds to the local science and research sector.

A little ways down Queen Street, the new invasive species centre, on the grounds of the Great Lakes Forestry Centre, will add even more to this growing sector.

Further along the waterfront, the expansions to the boardwalk and hub trail are ensuring an increased quality of life for Sault residents while also helping to attract visitors from around the world. The new federal bridge plaza, scheduled to be complete in 2014, is another project that will welcome tourists.

Meanwhile, in the city’s west end, Heliene Canada has established a solar panel manufacturing plant on the corner of Second Line and Allens Side Road. On nearby Yates Avenue, Ellsin Environmental is moving forward with its pilot tire recycling plant, which will utilized a patented reverse polymerization technology.

Not far away, two massive solar energy farms on Base Line are generating 20 megawatts of electricity. The lead company, Starwood Energy, is establishing 30 more megawatts on Black Road, and its total solar initiative in Sault Ste. Marie will generate enough juice to power 21,000 homes.

Finally, in the north end of the city, the new Sault Area Hospital is now complete and holds the title of largest construction project in the history of the city. As well, the new wing at Sault College will help ensure that one of Ontario’s fastest-growing colleges retains the moniker for years to come. Just a stone’s throw away, the new headquarters of the Algoma Public Health Unit was relocated to the college campus, providing many benefits, including expanded teaching and training opportunities.

Put simply, from east, west, north and south, new and exciting projects are sweeping across Sault Ste. Marie.

And with these projects, the future looks bright.
